UFC fighter drains his own elbow

Across his eighteen fight career, Phillipe Nover has, as all fighters do, suffered his share of injuries, bumps and bruises. In his scrap with Marcin Held at Bellator 159 back in November 2011, Nover landed several elbows that, while still much worse for his opponent, left Nover’s elbow tender, swollen, and filled with fluid.
In the video, Nover explains that despite the swollen elbow not being a source of great pain, the swelling was not going down and therefore the elbow must be drained with a needle.
“I use a 25 gauge needle. I hope this doesn’t hurt, but I’ve got to get rid of this fluid here, so I can begin my training. Took already a week off, so… let’s see if I can get in my elbow.”
The fun begins at about the two-minute and twenty second mark.
Nover burst onto the MMA scene on season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir. On The Ultimate Fighter, Nover impressed UFC head honcho Dana White to such a degree that Dana set a nearly impossible standard to meet by calling Nover “the next Anderson Silva.”
While Nover never went on to become the next Anderson Silva, he has been able to put together a solid professional mixed martial record of eleven wins, six losses and one draw, and has only been finished once. In 2015, Nover won Ring of Combat’s lightweight championship before returning to fight in The Ultimate Fighting Championship, at featherweight.
WARNING: DO NOT DRAIN YOUR OWN SWELLING. The results can be catastrophic. In cases where swelling will not go down, seek professional medical attention.
